Indian River Middle

May 2026

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

As we head into May, we have so much to celebrate here at Indian River Middle!

First, May 4–8 is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, and we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible dedication our teachers and staff show each and every day. Their commitment to supporting, challenging, and caring for our students is what makes our school such a special place. If you have a moment this week, we encourage you to share a note or kind word of appreciation. These gestures go a long way.

We are also proud to share some exciting news. Indian River Middle School has officially been revalidated as an AVID National Demonstration School! This distinction means that our school serves as a model for others across the country, showcasing rigorous instruction, meaningful student engagement, intentional use of AVID strategies that prepare students for success beyond middle school. Demonstration schools open their doors for educators to visit, learn, and see best practices in action. Even more impressive, we are one of only four schools in the state of Virginia with this recognition and the longest-standing demonstration school in the Commonwealth. This accomplishment reflects the hard work of our staff and students.

Looking ahead, SOL testing is right around the corner, and we want all students to feel confident and prepared. We strongly encourage students to attend their scheduled Power Sessions for each SOL they will take. These sessions provide targeted review and support. Families can help by ensuring students get a good night’s sleep, arrive at school on time, and come prepared each day, just like any other school day, with a fully charged Chromebook.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us make Indian River Middle a place where students truly Rise!
